Three rocket-like objects were found while workers dug a trench for a municipal water pipeline beside the road of A S M Abdur Rab Government College in Ramgati, Lakshmipur. The discovery was made on Wednesday morning. Sub-engineer Rifat Hasan informed the local police station after the objects emerged from the soil, and curious residents gathered at the site.

Ramgati police officer Liton Dewan said three “rocket launchers” were found during the digging work for the water line. The report described them as objects resembling rockets, while noting that it was not yet clear what they contained.

Police recovered the objects and kept them in station custody. The report described a rocket launcher as a type of temporary firearm that functions as an unguided object.

Former minister and former Awami League presidium member Abdul Latif Siddiqui has been arrested in a case over killings and crimes against humanity linked to a Hefazat-e-Islam gathering at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel on May 5, 2013. A Detective Branch police team arrested him from the Gulshan area of the capital on Wednesday, July 29. DMP media division Additional Deputy Commissioner Niaz Mehdi confirmed the arrest.

An arrest warrant had been issued against Siddiqui by the International Crimes Tribunal. The case alleges that a crackdown during the Hefazat-e-Islam gathering at Shapla Chattar resulted in widespread deaths, enforced disappearances, torture and crimes against humanity. Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 40 others have also been named as accused in the case.

The tribunal has taken cognizance of the allegations and directed necessary legal action against the accused. According to lawyers and court-related sources, Siddiqui will be placed under subsequent legal procedures in line with the tribunal’s order. The investigating agency may seek permission to question him if necessary.

A blast damaged the roof of a toilet at a home in Kadam Ali Madbar Kandi village of BK Nagar Union, Jajira, Shariatpur, on Wednesday morning. The explosion occurred around 9am at the home of Jabbar Madbar, causing the roof to collapse and throwing a water tank onto another part of the property. No one was injured or killed.

The loud blast spread panic in the surrounding area, and local residents went to inspect the damaged house. Residents said a major accident was avoided because nobody was nearby at the time. A Jajira police investigation team visited the site after being informed and collected various pieces of evidence.

Officer-in-charge Saleh Ahmed said the initial assessment was that an explosive had been placed there earlier and may have detonated after heating in the sun. Police are examining the type of explosive, how it arrived at the location and who was involved. A cocktail blast had damaged part of a septic tank behind a house in Bilaspur Union one day earlier. Police said operations to identify and arrest those involved are continuing.

Detective police arrested alleged Chittagong criminal Mobarak Hossain, also known as David Emon, in the Jhumjhumpur area under Jessore Kotwali police station. Police said the operation took place at about 3 a.m. on Tuesday night after a checkpoint was set up in the area. Three associates—Alis Tamal, Shafayat and Shamim—were detained with him and later shown arrested.

Law enforcement agencies had been working for several days to identify Emon’s location, according to the report. Based on secret information, surveillance, searches and checkpoints were increased in different parts of Jessore. Members of Jessore district police and Chittagong district police jointly took part in the operation. Jessore Superintendent of Police Syed Rafiqul Islam said officers verified the identities of four suspects stopped at the checkpoint before arresting Emon.

Police said Emon was handed over to Chittagong police after his arrest, while legal action was being taken regarding the other detainees. The report says he was recently accused of calling a Chittagong city businessman to demand extortion money. Officers also cited allegations of criminal activity and extortion against him. Police sources said he may be questioned in Chittagong in connection with the relevant case, and the roles of his three associates are being examined.

A student and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal worker, Zillur Rahman, has been accused of assaulting Ansar member Abul Hasan at the main gate of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon after Hasan asked Rahman, who was entering the campus by rickshaw, to show identification. CCTV footage of the incident circulated on social media on Wednesday, prompting discussion.

University sources said Hasan asked Rahman to identify himself, and requested his ID card after he said he was a student. An argument followed, and Rahman allegedly slapped the Ansar member. CCTV footage reportedly shows Hasan did not resist during the incident. Hasan said Rahman grabbed his uniform collar and slapped him five to six times after being asked whether he was lying about his identity.

Rahman described the incident as a misunderstanding, saying he later spoke with Hasan and that the matter was mutually settled. Proctor Dr Md Arfan Ali said the administration would bring both sides together to verify the facts and take necessary action. Student leader Ahmedul Kabir Tapas said the accused student holds no organisational post.

Police arrested Mobarak Hossain, also known as David Iman, described as the second-ranking figure in Chattogram's alleged Sajjad gang, at a checkpoint in Jhunjhumpur under Jessore Kotwali police station around 3 a.m. on Tuesday night. Three associates, Alis Tamal, Shafayat and Shamim, were also detained and later shown arrested. Jessore Superintendent of Police Syed Rafiqul Islam said detectives acted on secret information and handed Iman over to Chattogram police.

At roughly the same time, police launched a separate operation in Noakhali to arrest Rayhan Alam, described as the gang's killing squad chief, but he narrowly escaped. Chattogram district police superintendent Masud Alam said Rayhan remained under surveillance and expressed hope that he would be arrested soon. Police say Iman and Rayhan had jointly run the group's activities after the arrest of “Small Sajjad.”

Police and case records link Iman and Rayhan to allegations involving multiple killings, extortion and weapons-law cases, though the allegations have not been proven in court. Police sources said efforts to arrest Iman intensified after an allegation that he demanded extortion from a Chattogram businessman. He may be questioned in Chattogram in related cases, while police are examining the roles of his three associates. Sajjad Ali Khan denied involvement, saying a group was extorting people using his name.

Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission is conducting an inventory operation at another residence of dismissed Major General Ziaul Ahsan in Mirpur DOHS in the capital. The operation is being led by ACC Deputy Director Md Hafizul Islam, with an executive magistrate and other officials present, according to a July 29, 2026 report by BSS.

ACC Public Relations Deputy Director Md Aktarul Islam confirmed the development on Wednesday. He said the operation is underway at flat L-3, plot 541, road 31 in Mirpur DOHS. The ACC team and the executive magistrate are participating in the operation at the residence.

The commission said it is preparing a list of various items and documents found in the home as part of the ongoing inventory process. Detailed information will be provided later, according to the ACC official. Earlier, the commission carried out an inventory operation at Ziaul Ahsan’s eight-storey house in Jalsiri on July 30.

Allegations of irregularities and misappropriation have emerged over cash assistance linked to corrugated tin sheets for impoverished families in Chauhali upazila of Sirajganj. The allegations name Project Implementation Officer Md Hekmat Ali and Md Yusuf Ali, a CA at the UNO office. In fiscal year 2025-2026, 42 bundles of tin sheets were distributed among 26 families in Khashkaulia union, in the presence of then UNO Khodadad Hossain.

Beneficiaries said each family was supposed to receive Tk3,000 through a bank cheque alongside the tin sheets. They allege that, despite the passage of time after the UNO’s transfer, none of the 26 families received the money. Several beneficiaries said they received only the tin sheets and were given neither cash nor a bank cheque.

Yusuf Ali said the PIO knew about the matter and that he knew nothing. Hekmat Ali said he was on leave when the tin sheets were distributed and that only tin, not cash, had been allocated then; the money was allocated later. He said payments would be made according to the list, while funds for untraceable beneficiaries would be returned to the government treasury. Current UNO Md Nurul Amin said he knew nothing about the issue.

Several officials named in cases over alleged attacks on students and members of the public during July remain in their positions at Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology, according to a report published on July 29, 2026. The report said questions have been raised about the university administration after no visible action was taken against them for a long period, while some were allowed to rejoin work and continue their duties. The case complainant, July fighters and some students alleged administrative inaction.

Four officials named in a case filed by July fighter Amanullah Aman are still working at RUET, the report said: Raisul Islam Roj, Rafiqul Islam Bipu, Mufti Mahmud Roni and Mahabub Salam Setu. Mahmudur Rahman Dipon, named in a separate attack case, is also working at a university hall. Mamun-or-Rashid, named in a case alleging attacks during the anti-discrimination student movement, remains responsible for RUET's security branch despite his arrest on May 4, 2025.

Registrar Arif Ahmed Chowdhury said he had received no formal information on the accused and that action would be taken under rules if specific evidence emerged. Vice-Chancellor S. M. Abdur Razzak said several officials had already been temporarily suspended, while information about others had been sought from police. Aman called for the named officials to remain suspended until investigations are completed.

Police in Debidwar, Cumilla, are investigating an allegation that upazila Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal member secretary Nazmul Hossain Sarkar beat deed writer Saif Uddin after he refused to pay Tk20,000 allegedly demanded for drug use. The alleged incident occurred at about 6:30pm on July 26 outside Advocate Jamal’s chamber at Debidwar Mosque Market in Debidwar municipality.

Saif Uddin, who works as a deed writer at the Debidwar sub-registrar office, said Nazmul came to the chamber while he was sitting there and demanded the money. He alleged that he was beaten after saying he could not pay. Saif also alleged that Nazmul had long been involved with drugs and said this harmed the image of Chhatra Dal.

Nazmul could not be reached for comment despite repeated calls because his phone was switched off. Cumilla North district Chhatra Dal convener Asif Kabir said he had not yet been informed and would investigate, adding that organisational action would follow if Nazmul was involved. Debidwar police station officer-in-charge Md Moniruzzaman said a sub-inspector had been assigned to investigate and further action would be taken if extortion allegations were proven.

Students at Jagannath University have raised renewed concerns over campus security following repeated theft allegations, particularly involving bicycles. The report, published on July 29, 2026, said a bicycle belonging to Mohammad Ashik, a student of the law department’s 18th batch, was stolen from the campus at about 10:30 a.m. last Thursday. CCTV footage reportedly allowed an initial identification of the suspect’s appearance, but the bicycle has not been recovered and no one has been detained.

Students alleged that a shortage of security staff and inadequate surveillance have enabled thefts on campus. They said two other students from the same batch had bicycles stolen days earlier, while complaints have also involved mobile phones, bags and other personal belongings. They criticized the administration for failing to deliver lasting solutions and called for more guards, improved CCTV coverage, tighter monitoring at entry points and prompt action in theft cases.

Proctor Professor Dr. Nasir Uddin Nasir said authorities had collected video footage and changed the security officer. A guard will now remain stationed at the bicycle stand at all times, he said. He added that footage indicated thefts were carried out by outsiders, and said discussions with the vice-chancellor would be held on mandatory ID checks or a digital access-control system.

Border Guard Bangladesh’s Nildumur Battalion, known as 17 BGB, destroyed seized narcotics worth Tk319.4 million from border areas of Satkhira. The destruction took place formally at the Nildumur Battalion headquarters at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Brigadier General Mahmudul Hasan, regional commander of BGB’s South West Region, attended as chief guest.

According to BGB sources, 41 people were detained in operations conducted at different times in the border areas of Shyamnagar, Debhata and Kaliganj between September 7, 2023, and July 11, 2026. Authorities seized smuggled goods worth Tk518.6 million during those operations, including narcotics valued at Tk319.4 million.

The destroyed items included alcohol, Phensedyl and similar drugs, yaba, cannabis, heroin, LSD and crystal meth, also known as ice. Indian leaf cigarettes, illegal medicines, Sukhi pills and narcotic tablets were also destroyed. Mahmudul Hasan said BGB was working firmly toward a drug-free country and called for public participation alongside law enforcement agencies to build awareness and social resistance against drug trafficking.

A Dhaka court sentenced private driver Hridoy Bepari, also known as Md Hridoy Mia, to death for the killing of homeowner Afroza Sultana in Middle Badda. Dhaka Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Moin Uddin Chowdhury delivered the verdict on the morning of Wednesday, July 29. Sultana was found brutally killed with her throat cut at her second-floor flat in a multistorey building in Middle Badda on March 13, 2022.

Additional Public Prosecutor Md Zahidul Islam (Kaiyum) said the court convicted Hridoy under Section 302 of the Penal Code, 1860. He cited the motive, the accused's exclusive presence in CCTV footage, physical evidence, recovery of looted items and the continuity of forensic evidence. He said the victim's family and the prosecution were satisfied with the ruling.

In its observations, the court described the crime as among the rarest of rare, saying a trusted employee exploited that trust to kill an innocent woman in a brutal and calculated manner. The victim's brother filed the murder case the following day. The trial concluded within 30 working days after charges were framed, with testimony and cross-examination of 12 witnesses. The defence said it would appeal to the High Court.

The murder case of retired Major Sinha Md Rashed Khan remains unresolved six years after his death, despite lower court and High Court verdicts upholding death sentences for two defendants and life terms for six others. The case is now before the Appellate Division of Bangladesh’s Supreme Court. As of early July 2026, leave-to-appeal applications filed by the six life-term convicts had not been listed for hearing.

Sinha was killed by police gunfire at the Shamlapur checkpoint on the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive on the night of July 31, 2020. His sister, Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous, filed the murder case five days later. RAB submitted a charge sheet against 15 people, describing the killing as planned. On January 31, 2022, the Cox’s Bazar District and Sessions Judge’s Court sentenced former OC Pradeep Kumar Das and inspector Liaqat Ali to death.

The High Court upheld the lower court ruling on June 2, 2025, with its full judgment published on November 20. The state has supported retaining both verdicts, while Pradeep’s lawyer said he would challenge the High Court ruling. Sharmin said justice would be fully established only after an Appellate Division ruling and its implementation, and called for a swift final hearing.

More than 223,000 cubic feet of government-seized sand has been found missing from 170 sand piles in Joypur, Shuvapur Union of Chhagalnaiya upazila along the Feni River. A court-ordered remeasurement identified a shortfall of 223,830 cubic feet, with an estimated value of Tk 6,714,900 at Tk 30 per cubic foot. A theft case has been filed at Chhagalnaiya police station under Penal Code sections 379/34.

On February 18, upazila engineer Touhidul Islam measured the 170 piles and reported 3,898,697 cubic feet of sand. A later on-site remeasurement, ordered by the court, found a major discrepancy. The case statement says unknown individuals removed the seized sand sometime between 8pm on February 18 and 5:20pm on July 20. Police also seized trucks carrying allegedly stolen sand and jailed three truck drivers in separate cases.

Investigating officer SI Tanvir Mehdi said preliminary findings indicate theft of more than 200,000 cubic feet, while the investigation continues to establish the actual quantity and identify those involved. Police said detained drivers gave no information about the sand’s owner or destination. The report also describes disputes among several BNP groups over control of seized sand and sales proceeds, alongside allegations of clashes and attacks.
