A Chattogram metropolitan sessions judge court has ordered the withdrawal of a “shown arrest” against Ismail Hossain, also known as Tempur, and directed his release from jail. The order followed an application by his lawyer after an interim High Court order. The report, published on July 29, said the process for Tempur Ismail’s release has begun.

Court-related sources said a High Court bench comprising Justice Rajik-Al-Jalil and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury issued a rule after hearing Writ Petition No. 7948/2026 on July 8. The bench also said Ismail Hossain should not be harassed if there was no specific case or legal ground against him, and asked respondents to reply within four weeks.

Lawyer Mohammad Mizanur Rahman said his client was shown arrested in a case while the interim order remained in force, which he said conflicted with the court order. Police records say more than 30 cases, including murder, robbery, abduction, arms, narcotics and extortion allegations, are pending against Tempur in Chattogram and Cumilla.

Businessman S M Shahidullah Roni, 46, narrowly escaped after gunmen fired at his moving private car in Hathazari, Chattogram. The attack occurred around 11:30pm on Tuesday night in the Ichapur Charabot Tala area of the Chattogram-Rangamati highway, as Roni was driving himself from Chattogram city toward his home in Raozan.

Police and the victim said assailants first threw bricks in front of the vehicle in an apparent attempt to stop it. Roni switched off the car lights and stopped after sensing danger. Two armed men arriving on a motorcycle then fired four rounds at the rear of the vehicle before fleeing. Roni said the bullets passed through one side of the car and exited through the other.

Roni said he survived because he ducked in the driver's seat. He believed the attackers may have assumed he was seated in the rear and therefore targeted that part of the car. Hathazari police and Assistant Superintendent of Police Kazi Md Tarek Aziz visited the scene. Police said preliminary information suggests Roni may have disputes with individuals and groups in Raozan, while the planning, perpetrators and motive are under investigation.

Additional Inspector General of Police Barrister Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain formally assumed charge as head of Bangladesh Police’s Criminal Investigation Department, or CID, on Wednesday, July 29. He took over at the CID headquarters in Dhaka after being appointed to the post through a June 28 notification issued by the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Before joining CID, Hossain served on deputation as a director at the National Security Intelligence agency, where he was promoted to the rank of additional IGP. He joined Bangladesh Police as an assistant superintendent of police through the 15th BCS in 1995. His career has included assignments in police training, research, curriculum development, investigations, intelligence work and administration.

He previously served at CID headquarters and its Chattogram and Cumilla units as special superintendent of police, and as superintendent of police in Pirojpur and Chapainawabganj. His postings also included DMP, CMP, RAB, Police Headquarters and units in several police ranges. CID officers, including deputy inspectors general, additional deputy inspectors general, superintendents and additional superintendents, attended the handover event and congratulated him.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested 503 people in special operations across different police stations and divisions of the capital during the past 24 hours. A total of 30 cases were filed in connection with the operation, according to a report published on July 29, 2026.

Mirpur division recorded the highest number of arrests, with 122 people detained. Motijheel division arrested 82 people, followed by Tejgaon with 74, Uttara with 69, Wari with 41, Gulshan with 38, Lalbagh with 35 and Ramna with 34. The Detective Branch also arrested eight people.

Police said the operation recovered 107 kilograms of cannabis, 25 yaba tablets, gold ornaments weighing 8 bhori, 13 ana and 5 roti, nine mobile phones and two old motorcycles. One victim was also rescued. DMP Media and Public Relations Additional Deputy Commissioner Niaz Mehdi said necessary legal action was being taken against those arrested and that operations to control crime and drugs in Dhaka would continue.

Two people died within two days in Lalpur, Natore, after coming into contact with electrified fencing reportedly installed around poultry farms to deter foxes and thieves. On Tuesday morning, Sihab Ali, 55, of Bhatpara village, was electrocuted while attempting to disconnect a farm’s electricity connection at night.

Earlier on Sunday morning, local farmer Jiarul Islam, 30, died in the Bilmaria area after electrifying a GI-wire fence to protect his poultry farm from fox attacks. Police and local sources said electricity had been illegally connected to GI-wire fencing around farms to prevent foxes and thieves, and both men became entangled with the live wires.

Sohan Ali, son of Sihab Ali, filed a case at Lalpur police station against farm owner Md Aslam Hossain. Police visited the scenes and sent the bodies to Natore Sadar Hospital morgue. Lalpur police chief Shafiqul Islam said a regular case had been filed, no one had been arrested, and the matter remained under investigation. The upazila administration and rural electricity association have taken a strict position against illegal electricity use and risky connections.

An indictment has been filed at the International Crimes Tribunal in the killing case of Teknaf councillor Ekrmul Haque. The development, alongside reports that former RAB-7 commander Brigadier General Miftah Uddin Ahmed has been taken into army custody, has renewed discussion of alleged crossfire incidents during his tenure. At least 14 people were killed in RAB-7 operations in Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar and Feni between 2016 and 2018.

RAB said Ekrmul was shot during an anti-drug operation at Mithapani on Teknaf’s Marine Drive on May 26, 2018, and described him as a listed drug trader. His family said he was deliberately killed, not killed in a gunfight. A preserved audio recording of his final conversation with family members, followed by gunshots, caused nationwide concern after it was made public. The National Human Rights Commission called for an investigation.

Ekrmul’s wife Ayesha Begum said the family had sought an impartial investigation and justice for eight years. Chattogram Sujan secretary Akhtar Kabir Chowdhury said each alleged crossfire case from the period should face separate, impartial and independent investigation. The mother of 17-year-old Jahid Hasan, missing since 2018, alleged he was forcibly disappeared; the relevant force has not accepted responsibility.

The 8 Armed Police Battalion arrested a Rohingya youth in connection with the abduction of a six-year-old child from a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar. Battalion commander Riaz Uddin Ahmad confirmed the arrest on the night of July 29. The suspect, Zakaria, 30, is the son of Saiful Islam and a resident of Block 1 in Camp 18.

Police began gathering information after a Facebook page called “Rohingya Lens” uploaded a video on July 27 showing the child’s hands tied while a knife was held in front of him. The child could be heard screaming in fear. Through local camp leaders, police identified the child as Rahmat Ali, son of Mohammad Junaid and a resident of Camp 11.

According to police, Rahmat Ali was abducted on July 22 and the abductors demanded Tk320,000 in ransom. His family recovered him after paying the demanded amount on July 26, but did not initially seek legal action because of continuing threats. Acting on confidential information, police arrested Zakaria at a tea stall in Block K/09 of Camp 18 at about 10:30pm. He was handed to Ukhiya police and sent to a Cox’s Bazar court in the related case.

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir called for anti-drug operations involving political parties and journalists to be turned into a social movement. He made the remarks to reporters on Tuesday morning after an anti-drug awareness meeting at the conference room of the Thakurgaon deputy commissioner’s office. He said everyone should unite to eliminate drugs and do whatever is necessary for that goal.

The minister said journalists should play a positive role in building public awareness against drugs. He stressed that drug traders and people involved with the trade must be brought under the law and given exemplary punishment. He also emphasized the proper enforcement of existing laws. Fakhrul called for teachers, guardians, conscious citizens and the general public to participate together in the anti-drug movement.

After the meeting, Fakhrul visited Thakurgaon municipality and exchanged views with its officers and employees. He inspected the designated site for construction of the municipality’s new building and planted a sapling on the municipal premises. The district commissioner, police superintendent, district and municipal BNP leaders, government officials and an assistant director of the Department of Narcotics Control were among those present.

Former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Dr Selina Hayat Ivy appeared in court in a case over obstructing police and an attack during her arrest. She appeared at 10:30am on Tuesday before Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Nurul Huda Chowdhury in Narayanganj.

The court granted an application allowing Ivy’s lawyers to appear on her behalf in the case until a charge sheet is submitted. The application was approved in Ivy’s presence after the court considered her physical condition.

Ivy was arrested at dawn on 9 May 2025 from Chunka Kutir in the city’s Deobhog area. Residents argued with police throughout the night as officers arrived to arrest her. When she was taken away at dawn, her supporters obstructed police and attacked the vehicle convoy, according to the report. A case was later filed at Narayanganj Sadar police station, naming Ivy as an accused.

Police officer Monoranjan Mistri testified as the sixth witness before International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Tuesday in a crimes against humanity case over the alleged crossfire killings of two men in Agailjhara, Barishal. The case is against former MP Abul Hasanat Abdullah and three others. The victims were Tipu Hawlader, then joint general secretary of Agailjhara upazila Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, and Kabir Molla, organisational secretary of a local Jatiyatabadi social and cultural organisation.

Mistri said he served as an SI at Agailjhara police station from December 8, 2014, until the first week of June 2015. In his testimony, he said Barishal police superintendent AKM Ahsan Ullah visited the station on July 20, 2015, and said work had to be done for MP Abul Hasanat Abdullah, including a nighttime operation and a crossfire. Mistri alleged he was threatened over his job, promotion and annual confidential report after expressing inability.

He said he heard gunshots near the eastern slope of Agailjhara Bridge and inferred that the stated crossfire had occurred. At the health complex, he saw two bodies and prepared Tipu Hawlader's inquest report. He said he later learned that two ASIs from neighbouring Uzirpur police station carried out the crossfire.

A case has been filed against 107 people, including a BNP leader, over an attack on Forest Department officials and employees during an operation to remove illegal betel-leaf gardens from reserved forest land in Cox’s Bazar. Golam Mostafa, a beat officer of the Panerchhara Range under the Cox’s Bazar South Forest Division, filed the case at Ramu police station on Tuesday. Local ward BNP president Jasim Uddin was named as the principal accused.

The attack occurred around 10am on Monday in the Panerchhara Range area. The Forest Department alleged that a group of local encroachers launched a coordinated surprise attack as personnel attempted to evict the illegal gardens. It also alleged that local BNP leaders and activists carried out the assault. The complaint named 17 people and included another 80 to 90 unidentified accused.

Range officer Shariful Alam, forest guard Humayun Kabir, gardeners Saidul Islam and Md Sajid, and Emergency Response Team member Mizanur Rahman were seriously injured. Government equipment used in the operation was also damaged. The injured were admitted to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, while the department said preparations were underway to take Shariful Alam to Chattogram for advanced treatment.

District Detective Branch police arrested a man in Taraganj, Rangpur, over allegations of involvement in online gambling and fraud using fake visas. The report, published on July 28, 2026, identified the suspect as Md Azmaul Islam, also known as Azam, son of Abul Hossain of Nekirhat Darogapara village in the upazila.

Police said the operation was conducted late Monday night in the Nekirhat Darogapara area. Officers seized a laptop allegedly used in the fraud, several mobile phones, fake visas, documents related to a false lottery, and other evidence from the suspect.

The accused and the seized materials were handed over to Taraganj police station. Officer-in-Charge Ruhul Amin said a case had been filed under the Cyber Security Act and the Gambling Prevention Act. The report did not provide further details about the alleged online gambling operation, the method used to create fake visas, or any alleged victims of the fraud.

Mugda Medical College student Wasif Munim gave testimony as the second witness against 28 people, including former Dhaka South City mayor Fazle Noor Taposh and former textiles and jute minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak, over the killing of Farhan Faiyaz and eight others in Mohammadpur during the July uprising. He testified before International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Tuesday.

Munim said he joined protests after Abu Sayeed was killed on July 16, 2024. On July 18, protesters gathered at Asad Gate for a peaceful sit-in, but police fired tear gas and Awami League activists chased them, he said. Around 1 pm, he said, Chhatra League, Jubo League and Awami League activists armed with lethal weapons chased protesters into lanes around Dhanmondi 27.

Munim said he saw his classmate Faiyaz with a gunshot wound to the chest and helped arrange an ambulance after four people brought him over. Faiyaz was taken to hospital and then to intensive care. Munim said he used Faiyaz’s identity card to call his father and report the shooting. He later learned Faiyaz had died and sought justice.

Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sheikh Mohammad Ali received an award for the highest drug recoveries and courageous work. The Chattogram Range DIG Office presented the commemorative honor in recognition of his work during June and July.

The award was handed to Mohammad Ali at an event held Monday afternoon at the Chattogram Range DIG office. Mohammad Moniruzzaman, Deputy Inspector General of Chattogram Range Police, attended as chief guest. Senior officials of the Chattogram Range Police were also present at the ceremony.

After receiving the special honor, Sheikh Mohammad Ali expressed gratitude to the Cox’s Bazar district police superintendent, additional police superintendents, colleagues at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, community police members and senior officers who provided guidance. He said that whoever commits a crime must be brought under the law and that society must be made drug-free at any cost.

A mobile court sealed a factory accused of producing and marketing counterfeit edible oil in Shahjatpur, under Melandaha municipality in জামালপুর, on Tuesday afternoon. The joint drive by the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection and the Melandaha upazila administration fined the owner of Shashi Oil Mill Tk100,000. Authorities also disconnected the factory's electricity supply.

Melandaha Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Jinnatul Ara conducted the mobile court, while Jamalpur district consumer rights office Assistant Director Md Shariful Islam led the operation. Officials said the establishment had been producing edible oil while using the BSTI logo without approval. They also found that the factory had no valid authorization or documents.

Authorities said evidence was found of adulterated mustard oil being produced and sold. Jinnatul Ara said tests confirmed adulteration and that all adulterated oil stored at the factory had been discarded. Shariful Islam said samples had previously been sent to a laboratory, whose report found no recognized edible oil identity in the product. He said the business mixed a small amount of mustard oil with other ingredients and marketed the adulterated oil, which he described as highly harmful to human health.
