A report published on May 11, 2026, highlights a sharp rise in killings and brutality across Bangladesh, which experts attribute to deepening social decay. Recent incidents include multiple murders in Narayanganj, Khagrachhari, Chattogram, Mymensingh, and Gazipur between May 7 and 9. Dhaka Metropolitan Police data show 24 murders, 56 rapes, and 55 cases of violence against women and children in March alone. Human rights data indicate 294 women and children were killed in family violence in April 2024.
Sociologists and law enforcement officials identify drug addiction, online gambling, fake social media identities, and exposure to explicit or violent media as major drivers of moral decline. They warn that Indian television dramas and online content are influencing family conflicts and extramarital affairs. Police report that cybercrime and youth addiction to mobile gaming are worsening the problem.
Experts urge stronger legal action, restoration of social values, and an end to impunity. They emphasize that the lack of justice and growing exposure to negative influences are shaping a generation with distorted moral perspectives.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested Haider Kabir Mithun, 54, deputy managing director of Holistic Home Builders Ltd, for allegedly embezzling around Tk 120 crore from hundreds of clients under the guise of a housing project. The arrest was made under a case filed with Uttara East Police Station, according to a CID press release issued on Sunday.
According to the case statement, the company promoted a project near Uttarkhan Police Station, offering 36 shares of a proposed (G+9) building on 10 kathas of land, each priced at Tk 15 lakh. Many clients, including the complainant, invested significant sums at the company’s Uttara Sector-4 office. Despite issuing receipts and cheques, the company failed to register the promised land shares and instead delayed the process with various excuses. Later, clients discovered that the accused had collected funds from about 470 people through similar fraudulent schemes.
Investigators found that Mithun, as DMD, was directly involved in collecting and misappropriating client funds. The company’s managing director reportedly went into hiding, and a new board later disclaimed responsibility for transactions made between June 2022 and September 2024.

A surge in organized robberies has gripped the Sitakunda section of the Dhaka-Chattogram highway, one of Bangladesh’s busiest transport routes. According to local sources, gangs are attacking vehicles at night by throwing heavy objects to force them to stop, then robbing passengers at gunpoint. On May 8, robbers attempted to attack a police microbus in Bhatiari Union, but officers managed to capture one suspect. The following night, a microbus carrying wedding guests was looted in Nunachhara, with cash, phones, and jewelry taken within minutes.
Residents and travelers allege that inadequate night patrols have emboldened the gangs, making key areas such as Nunachhara, Kumira, and Faujdarhat increasingly unsafe. Transport operators warn that continued insecurity could disrupt trade and logistics linked to Chattogram port, threatening the national economy. Meanwhile, Sitakunda town is also facing a rise in thefts, drug activity, and youth gang violence, heightening public anxiety.
Police say investigations are underway and patrols have been reinforced, but locals question when visible improvements in safety will occur.
