The ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) has officially invited Tarique Rahman, acting chairman of Bangladesh’s BNP, to visit China. A nine-member BNP delegation recently traveled to Beijing, where they met with CPC Politburo member and National People’s Congress Deputy Chairman Li Hongzhong at the People’s Great Hall. The meeting aimed to strengthen bilateral relations, deepen political understanding, and enhance regional cooperation. Both parties expressed optimism about opening a new chapter in their political relationship and expanding collaboration in regional geopolitics.

Police have applied for a 10-day remand of former CEC KM Nurul Huda, citing 11 grounds related to allegations of election manipulation. Among the accusations: failure to ensure a free and inclusive 2018 general election, misuse of constitutional power through partisan administration, manipulating election results, issuing false statements and gazettes to favor a particular party, and acting as the central figure in a fascist system. Authorities claim further investigation is needed to uncover the extent of the alleged rigging and financial transactions.

Bangladesh’s banking sector is grappling with a growing crisis due to a sharp increase in non-performing loans (NPLs). As bad loans surge, banks are failing to maintain required provisions, creating a record shortfall of Tk 170,655 crore as of March 2025. Capital reserves have plunged to historic lows, limiting investment capacity. Corruption during the previous government’s tenure worsened the issue. Although reforms are underway, unrecovered and laundered funds have weakened financial foundations, reducing profits and increasing loan interest rates across the economy.
