Immigration police have arrested Anisur Rahman (52), former three-term chairman of Taraganj Upazila under the Rangpur Awami League. He was detained Sunday evening while attempting to cross into India via the Benapole border. Officials reported that his passport was flagged on a stop-list, prompting immediate questioning. After confirming multiple cases against him at Taraganj Police Station, Benapole authorities handed him over to local law enforcement.

BNP leader Dr. Zahid asserted that the party’s roots are firmly embedded among Bangladesh’s 180 million people. "There’s no reason to think that BNP will collapse with a slight push," he said. Despite facing severe repression—including disappearances, killings, and countless false cases over 17 years—the party remains resilient. Zahid warned party activists to stay cautious of collaborators of authoritarian forces who may spread misinformation or plot against BNP, emphasizing the need to avoid falling into such traps.

BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed stated that confusion exists over the terms ‘tenure’ and ‘term limit’ regarding the Prime Minister’s position. He explained that some interpret it as two times in office, others as two terms. But it’s possible for someone to be PM multiple times for short durations, making term counts meaningless. Salahuddin clarified that BNP’s written proposal specifies no one should serve more than two consecutive terms. However, defining the total number of years one can serve needs discussion, and a final stance should be determined through party forums.

As part of efforts to build public support for implementing Tarique Rahman’s 31-point agenda, BNP activists in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, conducted a day-long leaflet distribution campaign. Organized under the guidance of Azharul Islam Mannan, President of Sonargaon BNP, the campaign began at Mangalgaon Battala in Pirojpur Union. On Saturday night, the privately operated Titas Commuter train from Dhaka to Akhaura was forced to operate using mobile phone flashlights due to a locomotive failure. The train departed Ashuganj Station 15 minutes behind schedule at 8:48 PM but encountered problems after passing Talshahar Station. The locomotive’s headlight malfunctioned, compelling the staff to guide the train to Brahmanbaria Station using torchlight. Horns were repeatedly sounded to alert those nearby, and the train took nearly an hour to cover just eight kilometers.

Meghna Alam has filed a petition in court seeking the return of her seized mobile phone, iPad, and passport in connection with a case filed at Dhanmondi Police Station on charges of fraud and extortion.

The court held a hearing on Sunday and is scheduled to deliver its order on Monday. Previously, on April 28, the 30-day detention order against Meghna Alam under the Special Powers Act was revoked, leading to her release from custody. She has since been out on bail.

A high-level strategic planning meeting was held on Sunday with the goal of transforming the Mawa-Shimulia ferry terminal in Munshiganj into a modern, eco-friendly port. The meeting brought together five key advisors: Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Dr. M. Sakhawat Hossain, Adilur Rahman Khan, Sheikh Bashir Uddin, and Syeda Rizwana Hasan.

According to the proposal presented at the meeting, the new ICT Port Project will span approximately 29.13 acres and is intended to position Mawa-Shimulia as one of the country’s most efficient river ports. The estimated construction cost is BDT 756.71 crore, with annual maintenance expenses projected at BDT 30.89 crore.

The port is expected to handle up to 204,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) of containers annually, generating a potential yearly revenue of BDT 145.25 crore.

Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman has called on newly commissioned naval officers to face growing national and global challenges with patriotism and dedication to duty.

After nearly two hours of blackout, the power situation in Dhaka has begun to normalize following the repair of a technical fault at the Rampura grid. The issue, which started around 10 PM, initially affected the Rampura power grid and subsequently disrupted supply to several interconnected grids, plunging parts of Dhaka into darkness. A nine-member high-level delegation of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, left for China on Sunday night at 10:10 PM on the invitation of the Chinese Communist Party. Interim Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has reiterated the caretaker government's commitment to establishing an independent and efficient judiciary.

Speaking at a national seminar titled "Judicial Independence and Efficiency" at Hotel InterContinental on Sunday, Dr. Yunus said, “The July Revolution has opened the door to building a new civilization. It’s now time for those involved in the judiciary to seize this opportunity and work for meaningful change.”

Nahid Islam, Convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), stated that they have submitted their party’s registration application with more documents than required. He expressed hope that the NCP would receive official registration soon. Regarding the party’s proposed election symbol, Nahid said there are no legal obstacles to adopting 'Shapla' (Water Lily) as their symbol. If approved by the Election Commission, it will be allocated to NCP. He noted that 'Shapla,' 'Sheaf of Paddy,' and 'Star' are all considered national symbols, and other national elements like jackfruit already serve as electoral symbols for other parties. Addressing Citizen Unity’s demand for 'Shapla,' Nahid mentioned that they already have an official symbol, and he is hopeful that NCP’s request will be granted.

BNP Central Organizing Secretary Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu and his wife Sabina Yasmin have been acquitted in a tax evasion and corruption case filed against them.

According to the case details, the couple was accused of unlawfully acquiring and possessing assets worth Tk 84.44 million, and concealing information about assets worth Tk 50.13 million. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had filed the case in April 2007. After a lengthy legal process, the court has now cleared both of all charges.

Speaking on behalf of the party, Joint Secretary General Sani Abdul Haque stated that most political parties, except for two or three, have reached a consensus that no individual should serve as Prime Minister for more than 10 years in any format during their lifetime, as a safeguard against the return of authoritarian rule.

“We’ve emphasized to the commission that reforms inspired by the spirit of the 2024 mass uprising are essential to building a new Bangladesh. All political parties must approach this with a spirit of compromise,” Haque added.

Former Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal has been arrested and is currently being transported to the Detective Branch (DB) office for questioning. Police sources confirmed the development but did not immediately disclose the reason behind the arrest. The sudden move has sparked widespread speculation in political and legal circles. Habibul Awal served as the CEC of Bangladesh and played a key role in overseeing previous national elections. Further updates are expected as authorities prepare an official statement on the matter.
