OPEC Plus, the coalition led by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, has decided to increase its crude oil production target starting in August. The move comes as global oil prices continue to decline and exports through the Strait of Hormuz return to normal levels. The group said the decision reflects its shared commitment to maintaining stability in the global energy market.

According to an OPEC statement, seven participating countries agreed to implement an additional daily production increase of 188,000 barrels, building on the voluntary adjustments announced in April 2023. Analysts noted that the resumption of oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz has already boosted supply, contributing to downward pressure on prices.

The new production increase is expected to play a significant role in addressing supply shortages in the global energy market, according to the report sourced from Al Jazeera.

The Dhaka University unit of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal has condemned and protested remarks made by AB Party General Secretary Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuad about Dhaka University. In a statement released to the media on Sunday, the organization said Fuad’s comments, delivered during a University Day event, were insulting and hateful toward the university, its history, and its students. The group demanded legal action against the event organizers.

According to the statement, Fuad made the remarks on July 1 at a discussion organized by the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) to mark the university’s founding anniversary. Chhatra Dal said the comments sparked widespread criticism across the country and on social media. The group also alleged that DUCSU had remained silent for five days and had instead spread misinformation about Chhatra Dal to divert attention.

The statement further claimed that inviting Fuad to the event reflected an agenda against the university’s traditions of independence, democracy, and the spirit of the Liberation War. Chhatra Dal urged the university administration to take lawful measures against Fuad and the event organizers.

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti praised Cape Verde’s performance in the 2026 World Cup, saying Argentina’s tough match against them was not a failure but a testament to Cape Verde’s progress. Speaking at a press conference before Brazil’s round of sixteen match against Norway, Ancelotti cited the Argentina–Cape Verde game as an example of modern football’s competitiveness. Argentina narrowly won 3–2, but Cape Verde’s spirited play drew global attention.

Ancelotti emphasized that no match is easy in modern football and credited Cape Verde’s players and coach for their preparation and tactical growth. He stated that Argentina’s difficulties reflected Cape Verde’s strength rather than any shortcomings by the reigning champions. His remarks reinforced the idea that smaller football nations can now challenge traditional powerhouses.

The coach’s comments added to the ongoing discussion about Cape Verde’s breakthrough debut in the tournament, highlighting how emerging teams are reshaping global football dynamics.

Following the ceasefire agreement signed last month at France’s Versailles Palace between US President Donald Trump and Iran, analysts say a new geopolitical reality is emerging in the Middle East. The death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israeli strike ended decades of leadership, bringing his 56-year-old successor Mojtaba Khamenei and a younger generation of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps–aligned leaders to power.

Experts note that Iran, once seen as weakened by sanctions and regional setbacks, managed to maintain its position through military resilience, prompting Gulf states to reconsider reliance on US security guarantees. The new leadership is prioritizing state survival over ideology, engaging in talks with Washington while maintaining a firm stance. Domestically, modest social relaxations—such as easing hijab enforcement and limited alcohol tolerance—suggest efforts to rebuild public trust.

The ceasefire has led to temporary sanctions relief, allowing Iran to export oil for 60 days and raising prospects for asset unfreezing and reconstruction funding. However, uncertainties remain over financing and whether the fragile peace will hold amid unresolved nuclear and regional tensions.

The Bihari Rehabilitation Parliament (BBRS) organized a protest march in Mirpur demanding the withdrawal of three alleged fabricated cases filed by the Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO) mobile court against Bihari residents. The march, held on July 5, 2026, began at Talab Camp in Mirpur 11 and ended with a rally in front of DESCO’s Pallabi Zone office. Protesters also called for relocating DESCO’s court to the Old Dhaka court area.

The demonstration followed incidents on April 28, when DESCO’s mobile court fined five residents of Talab Bihari Camp Tk 2.8 million through three separate cases, sparking tension in the camp. At the rally, BBRS leaders and National Awami Party (NAP Bangladesh) Secretary General Neyaz Ahmad Khan criticized the alleged misuse of mobile courts and accused DESCO of acting in favor of land grabbers. They demanded judicial neutrality and the relocation of DESCO’s court to ensure transparency.

The rally concluded with a 10-point demand to the government, including stopping the misuse of mobile courts and protecting Bihari residents from harassment.

Tensions between India and Pakistan have intensified following the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). As Pakistan seeks to raise the issue internationally, Chinese political analyst Victor Gao stated at a seminar in Islamabad that if India uses water as a weapon against Pakistan, China could influence the flow of rivers originating from Tibet. Gao highlighted China’s strategic position along transboundary Himalayan rivers, emphasizing its geographical significance.

The comment comes as Pakistan continues efforts to draw global attention to India’s suspension of the treaty. Meanwhile, India reaffirmed on Thursday that the Indus Waters Treaty remains suspended and that its stance has not changed. New Delhi maintains that the suspension is a response to Pakistan’s continued support for cross-border terrorism.

India further stated that its current position will remain unchanged until terrorism ceases, signaling a prolonged diplomatic standoff over water-sharing and regional security concerns.

Ticket prices for the ongoing Football World Cup have fallen sharply ahead of the round of 16 matches, following the end of the group stage excitement. According to the report, FIFA has been unable to maintain high ticket prices due to lower-than-expected spectator interest. The steepest decline has been recorded for the highly anticipated United States vs Belgium match in Seattle, where prices dropped by more than 30 percent within days.

Data from TicketData.com show that the lowest ticket price for the match fell from about 4,000 dollars on June 1 to 1,549 dollars, later rebounding to 2,836 dollars after the U.S. secured qualification, before again dropping to 1,423 dollars and slightly recovering to 1,635 dollars. Analysts described the fall as unexpected, given Belgium’s base camp proximity to the venue and the expectation of strong attendance.

Despite the slump, the U.S.–Belgium match remains the second most expensive of the round, behind Mexico vs England. Experts attribute the overall market decline to the early exit of major teams and travel difficulties limiting international fan attendance.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has rejected claims that Italy played a major role in the United States’ military operation against Iran. She stated that Italy did not participate in the conflict and that its military bases were only used for logistical purposes. Her remarks came after NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte told Fox News that nearly 500 US aircraft had flown from Italian bases as part of the ‘Epic Fury’ operation.

Speaking to reporters during a France-Italy summit in southern France, Meloni described Rutte’s comments as exaggerated and oversimplified, saying he had failed to distinguish between different types of authorized flights. She added that if Italy had truly joined the war, US President Donald Trump would not have repeatedly expressed frustration over Italy’s lack of support.

The exchange comes amid diplomatic tension between Italy and the United States over the Iran issue. Earlier, Trump accused Italy of insufficient support for the operation, prompting Italy’s foreign minister to cancel a planned visit to Washington after calling Trump’s remarks serious and offensive.
