The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued warnings for coastal and maritime areas after a well-marked low over the northwest Bay of Bengal intensified into a monsoon depression. The system, located near 21.3°N and 87.3°E, is expected to move northwestward and cross the north Odisha coast within 24 hours. Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra seaports have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal number 3, while inland river ports have been asked to display signal number 1. The department forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall across most regions over the next 72 hours.

According to the latest bulletin, rainfall has already eased the ongoing heatwave, with Cox’s Bazar recording 101 millimeters of rain in the past 24 hours. Heavy rainfall is expected in Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions. Continuous rain may cause temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas of Dhaka and Chattogram and trigger landslides in hilly parts of Chattogram Division. Authorities have advised residents and local administrations to remain alert.

The Disaster Management and Relief authorities have instructed all relevant agencies to maintain emergency preparedness as the monsoon remains active across the country.

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed disappointment over not receiving a Nobel Prize during a speech at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, delivered ahead of the country’s 250th Independence anniversary celebrations. While highlighting America’s achievements, Trump noted that the United States has won the most Olympic medals and Nobel Prizes globally, then joked that he himself had not received one. He claimed to have stopped eight wars and therefore considered himself deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Trump’s interest in the Nobel Peace Prize is longstanding. Since the start of his second term, he has publicly asserted his worthiness for the award. Earlier in January, he said no one in history deserved the prize more than he did. The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize went to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who symbolically offered her medal to Trump, prompting the Nobel Committee to clarify that only official laureates hold the award’s recognition.

According to White House sources, Trump views the Nobel Prize as the ultimate validation of his diplomatic legacy, a sentiment echoed by a former aide last year.

For the first time, members of the Ansar and Village Defence Party (VDP) are taking part on a large scale in the Bangladesh Army’s summer exercise, which began on Sunday and will continue until July 14. The joint training aims to enhance national defense readiness and inter-force coordination through integrated tactical drills. Police in Barishal have arrested two individuals, including Mostafizur Rahman Litu, accused of assaulting Abdul Aziz Hawlader, Managing Director of Agrani Housing, and coercing him to sign two checks and several stamps. The incident occurred on June 27 at Aziz’s office on Sadar Road and became public after CCTV footage went viral on social media. Following a court case, police detained Litu and his associate Abul Kalam Azad, while efforts to arrest others continue.

According to sources, Litu was formerly a director of Agrani Housing and had previously settled his dues two years ago. However, after the BNP came to power, he allegedly renewed demands for money from Aziz. The Barishal district and city units of Jubo Dal later held a press conference denying that Litu is affiliated with their organization, stating he holds no position in any committee.

Litu claimed the dispute stemmed from unpaid business transactions and alleged that Aziz’s staff assaulted him before the confrontation. The court has ordered police to investigate and submit a report on the case.

Argentina, the defending champions, are preparing to face Egypt in the World Cup Round of 16, with coach Lionel Scaloni considering up to three changes in the starting lineup. According to Argentine outlet TyC Sports, adjustments may occur in defense, midfield, and attack. After a dramatic 3-2 extra-time win over Cape Verde, Argentina’s training was canceled due to a storm, shifting full focus to Tuesday’s knockout match.

The main debate centers on who will partner Lionel Messi in attack—Lautaro Martínez or Julián Álvarez. Álvarez, recovering from a pre-tournament ankle injury, is not yet fully fit, while Martínez struggled to make an impact against Cape Verde. In defense, Nicolás Tagliafico could replace Facundo Medina, who suffered cramps in the previous match. In midfield, either Leandro Paredes or Nicolás González may come in, possibly at the expense of Thiago Almada.

Scaloni is known for tactical surprises, but the core structure from the Cape Verde match is expected to remain, with any changes likely limited to strategic adjustments.
