A police constable was hospitalized after being assaulted by suspected drug dealers during a search operation in Tongi Bazar, Gazipur, on Saturday night. The injured officer, Rahat, serves at Tongi East Police Station and is currently receiving treatment at Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. while a police patrol team was conducting body searches of suspicious individuals on the Dhaka–Mymensingh Highway.
According to eyewitnesses, several drug dealers suddenly attacked Constable Rahat, beating him with fists and sticks, leaving him seriously injured. Fellow officers rescued him and took him to the hospital for treatment. The attack took place while the police were performing their regular patrol duties in the area.
Tongi East Police Station’s officer-in-charge Mehedi Hasan stated that a case was filed on Sunday afternoon against 10 to 12 unidentified individuals. Police are working to identify and arrest those involved in the assault.

Police in Naogaon’s Porsha upazila arrested an alleged drug dealer named Shamim Chowdhury with 1,000 Tapentadol tablets on Saturday night. The arrest took place around 8 p.m. in the Baliyachanda area along the Saraigachi–Sapahar regional highway. Shamim, son of the late Dulal Chowdhury from Chandura Babupur village in Sapahar upazila, was detained during a special operation led by Porsha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ziaur Rahman under the direction of Naogaon Superintendent of Police Md. Tarikul Islam.
Police said the operation was part of a nationwide anti-narcotics drive. During the search, officers found 1,000 Tapentadol tablets in a shopping bag carried by Shamim, with an estimated market value of about three lakh taka. His Suzuki Gixxer motorcycle was also seized during the operation.
A case has been filed against the detainee under the Narcotics Control Act, and he was sent to jail through the court on Sunday. Police stated that anti-drug operations will continue and that they remain firm in combating such crimes.
Police arrest man with 1,000 Tapentadol tablets in Naogaon’s Porsha upazila
A painter named Taiyab Ali, aged 40, died after being electrocuted while painting a building in Jhenaidah town’s Post Office Mor area on Sunday afternoon. According to police, he was working on the second floor of a four-storey building under construction above Akhtar Pharmacy when he came into contact with a main power transmission line running close to the structure. He died instantly at the scene.
The deceased was a resident of Haripur village in Maharajpur Union under Jhenaidah Sadar upazila. Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shamsul Arefin confirmed the incident and stated that the body would be handed over to the family after completion of legal procedures.
Authorities have not provided further details about the safety conditions at the site or any investigation into the incident.
Painter dies from electrocution while working on building in Jhenaidah town
A man died after being electrocuted while cutting a bamboo that had fallen on an electric wire in Chakdadpur village under Dhubil Union of Raiganj upazila in Sirajganj. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Faridul Islam, 35, son of Md. Gaziur Rahman Gazi of the same village.
According to local sources, Faridul attempted to remove the bamboo from the electric wire using a machete when he accidentally came into contact with electricity and was severely injured. Locals rescued him and took him to Raiganj Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead. The news spread quickly, casting a pall of grief over the area as relatives mourned his death.
Officer-in-Charge of Salanga Police Station Md. Aslam said police visited the scene and filed an unnatural death (UD) case regarding the incident.
Man dies from electrocution while cutting bamboo entangled in power line in Sirajganj
A suspected robber named Dulal was killed in a mob beating in Nazirpur upazila of Pirojpur district after attempting a burglary at the home of college teacher Nazmul Hasan on Saturday night. Police said Dulal was from Hizla upazila in Barishal. The incident occurred when an eight-member gang broke into Nazmul’s house in Kalaradoania village, held the family hostage, and attacked Nazmul and his son Mishkat with sharp weapons.
According to local accounts, Nazmul retaliated, and when his wife screamed for help, neighbors surrounded the house. The robbers fired blank shots and fled, but Dulal was caught and beaten to death by locals. Nazirpur police chief Tariqul Islam confirmed that preparations were underway to file a case and efforts were ongoing to arrest the remaining gang members.
Nazmul and his son, both seriously injured, were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Police said Dulal had 15 previous cases filed against him in different police stations.
Robber killed in mob beating after failed burglary attempt in Pirojpur’s Nazirpur
The Sylhet Battalion of Border Guard Bangladesh (48 BGB) conducted coordinated anti-smuggling operations across several border areas in Sylhet, seizing goods valued at approximately 4.87 million taka. Acting on confidential information, the raids took place in locations including Banglabazar, Sonalichela, Sripur, Domdomia, Protapur, Songram, Tamabil, Sonarhat, and Bisnakandi Border Outposts.
According to BGB, the confiscated items included Indian cattle, cumin, sugar, tires, saris, blankets, chocolates, creams, olive oil, facewash, soap, mehendi, biscuits, bidi, and liquor. Additionally, betel nuts and catfish were seized while being smuggled out of Bangladesh. The total estimated market value of the seized goods was reported to be 4,868,640 taka.
The 48 BGB commander stated that regular patrols and intelligence operations are being maintained to strengthen border security and prevent smuggling and drug trafficking in the Sylhet region.
BGB seizes smuggled goods worth nearly five million taka in Sylhet border raids
A college student was killed and at least 30 others injured in a violent clash between two groups over possession of government land in Begumpur village of Nabiganj upazila, Habiganj, on Sunday morning. The deceased, Manjur Mia, 23, was a first-year BA student at Nabiganj Government Degree College and son of Khalilur Rahman. Police said the situation was brought under control and the body was sent to the morgue.
According to local sources, Khalilur Rahman had long been living on the government land, which another group led by Helal Mia and Moniruzzaman attempted to seize. The longstanding dispute escalated when Helal and Moniruzzaman’s men allegedly tried to occupy the land with weapons, triggering the clash. Manjur and about 20 others were injured, and he was declared dead at Nabiganj Upazila Health Complex.
Police have deployed additional forces in the area and launched an operation to arrest those involved. The investigation officer confirmed that the situation remains under control.
One student killed, 30 injured in land dispute clash in Habiganj’s Nabiganj
Two journalists were assaulted on Saturday morning, April 18, in the Kashimpur area of Vedarganj upazila, Shariatpur, while filming alleged illegal fuel sales at Messrs Faria Filling Station. The victims were Zahid Hasan Tipu, correspondent of Daily Inqilab, and Ashiqur Rahman Hridoy, correspondent of Daily Samakal. Tipu filed a written complaint at Sakhipur Police Station the same evening, accusing pump owner Faruk Madbar and his nephew Zaman Madbar of the attack.
According to the victims and local sources, the filling station had long been accused of hoarding fuel in drums and selling it at inflated prices instead of supplying waiting vehicles. When the journalists began recording the scene, the pump owner and his associates allegedly obstructed them and attacked Tipu. Locals rescued the injured journalists and took them to Vedarganj Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Local journalist leaders condemned the incident, calling it an attack on press freedom and demanding swift legal action. Police confirmed receiving the complaint and said an investigation was underway.
Journalists attacked in Shariatpur while filming alleged illegal fuel sales

Trawler carrying 280 migrants sinks in Andaman Sea; only nine rescued, traffickers still at large
Three Bangladeshi youths were detained by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) on Sunday afternoon while allegedly attempting to bring drugs into Bangladesh through the Par Gopalpur border in Maheshpur upazila of Jhenaidah. According to local residents, the arrests took place in the Madhupur area of India after the youths crossed the border illegally.
The detainees were identified as Shahin, 22, son of Abdul Gani of Par Gopalpur village; Sohag, 27, son of Abu Bakkar of the same village; and Hridoy, 15, son of Hayat Ali of Kanaidanga village. Locals said they entered Indian territory to collect drugs when BSF patrol members apprehended them.
Lieutenant Colonel Md Rafiqul Alam, commanding officer of Maheshpur 58 BGB, confirmed that the trio was detained by BSF while attempting to bring drugs. He said communication had been established with BSF regarding the matter, and the detainees were reported to be in good health under BSF custody.

A Dhaka court has once again postponed the submission of the further investigation report in the murder case of Shahid Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho. The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court had set April 19 for the report’s submission, but the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) failed to present it. As a result, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sefatullah fixed May 5 as the new date. This marks the twelfth time the submission date has been deferred.
Osman Hadi was shot by assailants on December 12 last year near Box Culvert Road in Paltan while returning from Friday prayers. He was later taken to Singapore for advanced treatment but died on December 18. A murder case was filed two days after the attack, and the murder charge was added on December 20 following a court order.
Earlier, the Detective Branch had submitted a charge sheet against 17 accused, 11 of whom are in custody and six absconding. Dissatisfied with that report, the plaintiff filed an objection, prompting the court to order the CID to conduct further investigation.
Dhaka court again delays CID report in Osman Hadi murder case
A student of Jahangirnagar University was detained by dormitory authorities while allegedly consuming drugs inside a female dormitory room. The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2026, in room 116 of Nawab Faizunnesa Hall. The detained student, Inisha, is from the Department of Drama and Dramatics, 48th batch, and a resident of Begum Khaleda Zia Hall. Authorities recovered marijuana, bottles of local and foreign liquor, smoking equipment, lighters, cigarette remnants, and a suspicious liquid from the room.
According to the hall provost, Professor Golam Mostafa, the incident came to light after students reported a strong odor from the room. The student was found consuming drugs and was not a resident of that hall. The Begum Khaleda Zia Hall administration has been informed. The seized items have been confiscated, and the matter is under serious investigation.
A five-member investigation committee has been formed, headed by Professor Dr. Sultana, with Deputy Registrar Ear Hossain as member secretary. The committee also includes Rasheda Khatun, Nadia Sultana, and Shahanaj Akter.
Jahangirnagar University student detained with drugs; five-member probe committee formed
At least six people were killed and fourteen others injured in a shooting in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, on Saturday, according to authorities. The attacker, a resident of the Holosiivskyi district in southern Kyiv, first opened fire on people in the street before entering a nearby supermarket and taking several hostages. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said police attempted to negotiate with the gunman for about forty minutes, but he remained unresponsive and agitated.
President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that four people were killed on the street, and a woman in her thirties later died in hospital. The attacker also killed one of the hostages. Klymenko stated that police tried to persuade the gunman to surrender to allow medical aid for the wounded, but he made no demands and did not respond. After killing a hostage, police were ordered to neutralize him.

Gunman kills six and injures fourteen in Kyiv before being shot dead by police
A joint convener of the Mahiganj Thana unit of the Volunteer Party, Sajedul Islam Shoaib, aged 37, was arrested in Rangpur city with 72 bottles of Phensedyl during a special operation by the Detective Branch (DB) police. The operation took place on the night of April 18, 2026, following a tip-off about a large drug consignment heading toward Rangpur Railway Station. Police intercepted Shoaib in the Khasbag area, seizing a motorcycle and a bag used for transporting the drugs.
According to police sources, Shoaib admitted during interrogation that he had received the drugs two days earlier from an unidentified person in Kurigram’s Fulbari area. He had planned to deliver the consignment to another person via a Dhaka-bound train. Shoaib is the son of the late Amanat Ullah Bhuiya of Khasbag, Mahiganj.
Following the arrest, the Rangpur Metropolitan Volunteer Party expelled Shoaib from the organization. In a joint statement, city convener Imran Hossain and member secretary Nur Hasan Sumon said the expulsion was due to his involvement in unethical activities violating party discipline.
Rangpur volunteer leader arrested with Phensedyl, expelled from party after DB police operation
Police in Kuliarchar, Kishoreganj, arrested a man named Pukai Chandra Barman, now known as Md. Usman Mia, on Friday night based on a court-issued warrant. The arrest took place in South Salua village under Salua Union. Local sources said several family mediations were held after his conversion, during which he stated that he changed his religion voluntarily and expressed willingness to support his wife, children, and mother. The last mediation decided he would pay 4,000 taka monthly for family expenses.
Some locals claimed he faced family pressure after converting, but no official statement on this matter has been issued by authorities.
