Students at the University of Chittagong staged separate protests after a student was injured in an attack allegedly carried out by local residents. The demonstrations were organized by the university’s central student council (Chakshu) and the campus unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir. The protests took place at the university’s Zero Point area on Friday midnight and again at noon.
Chakshu’s communication and housing affairs secretary Ishaq Bhuiyan criticized the absence of police presence at the campus police outpost, noting that in the past, hundreds of officers were deployed to prevent internal conflicts. He demanded swift justice for those involved in the attack. Mohammad Parvez, secretary of the campus unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir, accused a local syndicate in Jobra village of repeated assaults on students and urged the university administration to dismantle the group.
Both student bodies called for immediate action to ensure student safety and restore a secure environment on campus.

Three young men sustained burn injuries in the incident.
Fire service units rushed to the scene and managed to bring the blaze under control, but by then goods worth approximately 1.5 to 1.7 million taka had been reduced to ashes across two factories. The injured—identified as Md. Sulaiman, Tanvir Hossain, and Md. Shubho—were sent to Dhaka in critical condition for treatment.
Factory owners Billal Hossain and Nazrul Islam said they narrowly escaped the fire after hearing shouts of “fire” and running outside, but their entire business was destroyed.

According to police, locals, and the injured child, the attackers entered the house after Nasima and her son had gone to sleep, using a mobile phone light to identify and repeatedly strike her. When Abir woke up, he was also stabbed. After the attackers left, Abir came outside at dawn and called for help. Neighbors informed police through the emergency hotline and took the injured boy to Bhola Sadar Hospital.
Police said legal procedures and post-mortem formalities are underway while the child continues to receive treatment.

Twenty injured in Kushtia village clash over local dominance
Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) in Brahmanbaria has solved the murder of six-year-old schoolgirl Nishat, whose body was found in a sack near her home on April 17, 2026. PBI Superintendent Sachin Chakma stated that neighbor Isha Mia, an autorickshaw driver, confessed to killing Nishat after failing in an attempt to sexually assault her. The suspect was taken into custody from Mohanpur village on April 18.
According to police, Nishat went missing on April 15 after leaving home to buy chips. Isha lured her to a park in Rasulpur, then brought her to his house at night, where he attempted to assault her. When Nishat threatened to tell her mother, he suffocated her with his shirt. The next day, he hid the body in his house and later dumped it in an open area near the home.
Following Isha’s arrest, local residents protested demanding his execution and set fire to his house.

Mintu Mia was a resident of Char Motua village in Noakhali Sadar upazila and worked at Fahad Bricks Manufacturer in Ramganj.
According to police and local sources, the landowner found the body while inspecting his paddy field. The victim’s mouth was found tied with a towel. Ramganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Firoz Uddin Chowdhury confirmed the incident and said the body had been sent to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital morgue for examination.

Police recover body of brick kiln worker from paddy field in Ramganj
Battery-run rickshaw and van drivers in Domar upazila of Nilphamari blocked a road on Saturday morning to protest toll collection. The demonstration began around 11:30 a.m. when drivers gathered in the town center, alleging harassment in the name of tolls. During an argument, toll collector Abdur Rashid was beaten by the protesters. The blockade continued for about four hours, disrupting traffic in the area.

Leaseholder Shariful Islam Pappu stated that the municipality had leased the right to collect tolls from auto-rickshaws and vans operating within its jurisdiction, and that each toll point had designated personnel. Domar Upazila Executive Officer Shayla Saeed Tonni said that extortion would not be tolerated and that only lawful municipal procedures would continue.

Drivers in Nilphamari block road over toll dispute, toll collector beaten during protest
Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested an auto-rickshaw driver named Sagar Sheikh Babu, aged 37, for allegedly killing a security guard in Dhaka’s Pallabi residential area. The arrest was announced at a press conference held on Saturday afternoon at the PBI Dhaka Metro North office in West Agargaon.
According to PBI Additional DIG Enayet Hossain Mannan, the incident occurred on April 13 around 1 p.m. when Sagar Sheikh Babu attempted to enter the residential area without prior permission. Security guard Salahuddin stopped him, leading to an argument. Enraged, the driver physically assaulted the elderly guard, striking him repeatedly on the head and face. Salahuddin lost consciousness and was taken to a hospital, where he died the next day. Following the incident, the victim’s wife, Halima Begum, filed a case with Pallabi Police Station.
Based on witness statements and CCTV footage, investigators identified and arrested the suspect early Friday from Mirpur Section-11. The rickshaw used during the incident was also seized.
Auto-rickshaw driver arrested for killing security guard in Dhaka’s Pallabi area
District Detective Branch (DB) police in Noakhali Sadar upazila arrested four individuals with 1,400 liters of illegally stored diesel and a red voucher vehicle. The arrests took place late on Friday, April 17, following a raid based on secret information. The detainees were identified as Md. Rashed, Nasir Uddin, Shihab Uddin, and Md. Maksud, all residents of different areas within the upazila.
According to police sources, the operation was conducted under the direction of the district superintendent of police and led by Sub-Inspector Helal Uddin. Acting on intelligence that diesel was being hoarded for sale at inflated prices, the DB team raided Abdul Malek Oil Store in Uday Sadhur Hat South Bazar of Char Motua Union around 11:45 p.m. The team seized the diesel and the vehicle during the operation.
District DB Officer-in-Charge Mohin Uddin confirmed that a case under the Special Powers Act has been filed at Sudharam Model Police Station, and the detainees were sent to court on Saturday afternoon.
Four held in Noakhali with 1,400 liters of illegal diesel storage
A BNP leader in Rangpur’s Badarganj allegedly assaulted a mosque muezzin and two others after they assisted a mobile court during an anti-illegal sand extraction drive. Authorities in Syedpur upazila of Nilphamari district seized 4,505 liters of illegally stored fuel during a late-night operation on April 17, 2026. Arms dealer Md. Majedul Haque Helal has confessed in court under Section 164 in connection with the murder of Inquilab Mancha spokesman Sharif Osman Hadi. Police produced Helal before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Saturday after a three-day remand. He voluntarily agreed to give a confessional statement, which was recorded by Magistrate Arifur Rahman following a request from CID Assistant Superintendent Abdul Kadir Bhuiyan. Investigators traced the pistol used in Hadi’s killing to his shop, revealing that the weapon had changed hands through several licensed dealers since its import in 2017. Helal’s arms license, originally issued in his father’s name, had expired in 2014 and was not renewed. Police sought his remand to determine how the weapon reached the attackers.
Hadi was shot on December 12 last year in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar area and later died in Singapore on December 18. The case was later transferred to the CID for further investigation.

Her classmates described her as a bright student and expressed hope that she would be able to continue her education.
Police Sub-Inspector Saidur Rahman confirmed that the girl was returned to her family after they signed a written pledge, witnessed by local elders, promising not to proceed with the marriage.
Pirojpur SSC student seeks police help to stop forced marriage before exams
A police assistant sub-inspector (ASI) named Md Imran Hasan was beaten by locals in Faridpur’s Saltha upazila after allegedly being caught in the house of a drug case suspect’s wife late at night. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Friday, April 17, in Bolivodradia village under Ramkantapur Union. Imran, who serves as an assistant beat officer in the same union, was later rescued by police and admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
