Leaders of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) have demanded an unconditional apology from BNP leader Fazlur Rahman for his derogatory comments about Dhaka University students.
In a protest note signed by DUCSU General Secretary SM Farhad, the leaders condemned remarks labeling DU students as “sold-out minds,” “trend followers,” “servants,” and “backward.” Rahman also reportedly compared the university to Hathazari Madrasa.
DUCSU stated such remarks are an affront to the dignity of students and tarnish the university’s reputation as a century-old hub of liberal thought, inclusivity, and democratic struggle. They described the statements as politically motivated, hateful, and racially charged.

Rajshahi University (RU) has formed an investigation committee after allegations surfaced that Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Main Uddin Khan was assaulted during a dispute over the “pet quota” admission system.
The university’s syndicate meeting has meanwhile suspended institutional privileges for pet quota admissions, pending a final decision. The long-delayed RUCSU election will proceed as scheduled on September 25.
However, a section of RU teachers, officers, and employees rejected the syndicate’s suspension of the quota system, announcing a complete campus shutdown and tougher programs starting tomorrow. Earlier, staff staged a work stoppage outside the Senate building in protest of the alleged assault.

Savar — Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have strongly condemned recent remarks by Jamaat leader Amir Hamza, dismissing them as fabricated and defamatory.
Hamza had claimed he was admitted to the Journalism and Media Studies department and alleged that students rinsed their mouths with alcohol in the dormitories, even assaulting teachers with sticks.
In a statement, JU clarified that the Journalism and Media Studies department was only established in 2011, making Hamza’s claim false. The administration labeled his allegations as baseless, malicious, and “deeply regrettable,” urging him to refrain from making such unfounded comments.

Tensions are running high at Gono University ahead of the central student council election, after VP candidate Sheikh Khodar Noor Islam sought refuge at the campus journalists’ association office fearing an attack.
He remained there for nearly two and a half hours until another VP candidate, Nasim, escorted him out around 6 pm.
Khodar Noor, formerly the Dhaka (North) convener of JCD, alleged that anonymous Facebook accounts had been posting defamatory content against him, sparking disputes with rival candidate Tanzit’s supporters.
Meanwhile, Tanzit accused Noor of threatening him for supporting rival VP candidate Rakib. Witnesses said heated arguments escalated into shoving and threats of police involvement.
After being escorted out, Noor dismissed the intervention as political showmanship: “There’s no need to do politics in the name of rescuing me. We don’t want this kind of drama.”

Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Niaz Ahmed Khan has praised the successful completion of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election, calling it a milestone for student democracy.
“To continue students’ practice of expression, leadership, and democratic engagement, institutional platforms like DUCSU are essential,” he said.
Khan emphasized the need to rise above narrow partisanship and violence for the greater interest of the nation. He also highlighted cooperation between universities, noting that institutions like Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU) extended constant support and goodwill during the process.
“We managed to complete the DUCSU election in a manner accepted by the nation, with contributions from many and by Allah’s mercy,” the VC said. He also reflected warmly on Noakhali, describing its people as “struggling, hospitable, and among the best in the country.”

The Rajshahi University (RU) administration has suspended admission activities under the reinstated “pet quota” following days of student protests.
In an official statement posted on the university’s Facebook page, authorities announced an emergency syndicate meeting scheduled for Sunday to review the overall situation.
Earlier, students from 17 residential halls staged a mass protest, surrounding the Vice Chancellor’s residence late at night and issuing an ultimatum to revoke the quota by midnight.
Meanwhile, RU teachers, officers, and staff declared a full-day work stoppage for Sunday after alleging that pro-quota protesters harassed university officials, including the Pro-Vice Chancellor, following a senate meeting.

A controversy has arisen at Jahangirnagar University after a newly published dormitory list mistakenly placed a female student in a male dorm room.
As the academic year 2024–25 begins on Sunday, the university released class rolls, registration numbers, and hall seat allocations. In one list for Dormitory No. 10, the name of a female student was included alongside three male students in room 138.
The university clarified through an official notice that the student in question had in fact been allocated a room in Begum Khaleda Zia Hall. Professor Mohammad Rezaul Rakib acknowledged the error, calling it accidental.
However, Deputy Registrar (Education) Mohammad Ali Reza stated that the official website contains no mistakes, blaming the discrepancy on internal mismanagement within the hall administration.

A scuffle broke out between students and faculty at Rajshahi University on Saturday afternoon over the “pet quota” issue, leaving several injured including former coordinator Salahuddin Ammar and Al Shahriar Shuvo, general secretary of the Student Rights Council (RU branch).
Students reportedly besieged the residences of the university’s two pro-vice-chancellors, locking the gates. Unable to enter one residence at midday, pro-vice-chancellor Prof. Main Uddin and proctor Mahbubur Rahman returned. As they moved toward Zuberi Hall, students followed, chanting slogans. A faculty member and a printing-press official tried to restrain the students on the Zuberi Hall verandah, and a physical confrontation began.
Pro-vice-chancellor Main was later confined on the second-floor verandah of Zuberi Hall by students. University officials said around 10 staff members — including the pro-vice-chancellor, the registrar, the proctor and the public relations administrator — were temporarily surrounded. Several students and activists sustained injuries in the clashes.

Gathering at the city’s Zero Point around 1 pm, the students demonstrated for over an hour, pressing three demands:
Cancellation of the proposed six-member committee,

Abolishment of quotas and recruitment based solely on merit.
The students accused diploma technicians of trying to revive the quota system, even staging transport blockades to disrupt public life.

Students of the seven Dhaka University-affiliated colleges have issued an ultimatum: unless they are officially recognized as a central university by next Monday, they will launch tough protests.
The students accused certain teachers—who they claim never supported them since 2017—of now obstructing the move. “No final solution will come without an ordinance,” they declared.
Teachers have reportedly warned students that fresh agitation could affect exam results. In August, Dhaka University formally handed over administrative, academic, and financial responsibilities of the seven colleges, along with admission data for 2024–25, to the proposed Dhaka Central University authority.

Golam Rabbani, former general secretary of the banned student organization Chhatra League, is facing the cancellation of his M.Phil admission due to irregularities prior to the 2019 DUCSU election. The university syndicate has temporarily revoked his enrollment, and a probe committee has recommended declaring his election as Graduate Student (GS) representative invalid.
The investigation revealed that Rabbani’s admission did not follow proper procedures, rendering him ineligible to contest the 2019 DUCSU elections. The report further notes multiple irregularities during the election process, including:
Voting by proxies on behalf of candidates or panels
Preventing non-resident students from entering polling centers
Ballot tampering and artificial line creation to manipulate voting
Occupation of polling centers
Illegal stamping on ballot papers
Intimidation of voters
Participation in elections through illegitimate enrollment
The committee emphasized that further investigation is required to make definitive decisions regarding these violations.

They reiterated their three-point demand, which includes:
Ensuring that recruitment for Grade-9 positions is limited to BSc engineering graduates.
Abolishing the 100% quota for diploma holders in Grade-10 posts.
Enforcing strict legal action against anyone without a BSc degree using the professional title “Engineer.”

Two students of Bangladesh Agricultural University, including a female student, were assaulted by outsiders near the university’s First Gate on Sunday afternoon.
The victims were identified as Agriculture Faculty students Rashidul Alam Rifat and Nahar. One of them sustained head injuries and was treated at the university health care center.
Witnesses said the clash erupted when locals blocked campus roads in protest, demanding that the KB College playground remain open for public use. When the two students attempted to enter campus, they were stopped, leading to a heated altercation and a violent attack. Female student Nahar was reportedly beaten with a belt.
Tensions have escalated in recent weeks, with locals even threatening to bomb the college and harm faculty members after authorities restricted outsider entry. Teachers and staff had staged a hunger strike in protest but called it off following assurances from university officials.
