The Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (JAKSU) election commission has suffered another setback as commission member Dr. Rezwana Karim Snigdha resigned from her post on Saturday afternoon.
In her resignation letter, submitted around 2 p.m., Dr. Snigdha explained that she had suddenly fallen ill during the election process and was admitted to Evercare Hospital. As a result, she was excluded from key commission decisions such as ballot paper approval, budget finalization, and the cancellation of VP candidate Amartya Roy’s nomination. “I was not informed, and unilateral decisions were made,” she wrote.
Despite her illness, she stated that she attended post-poll vote counting in an attempt to fulfill her duties. However, she expressed deep frustration over the commission’s management.
Dr. Snigdha criticized the commission for severe administrative mismanagement, excessive political maneuvering, and even false allegations linking a deceased teacher to the vote-counting process. She said such “invisible pressures” had made it morally impossible for her to continue.
“When JAKSU is used merely as a tool for political gain, it is no longer possible for me, as an independent teacher, to serve as a member of this commission,” she declared.

Independent candidate Abdur Rashid Jitu secured the Vice President (VP) post with 3,334 votes, while Shibir-backed candidate Mazharul Islam won the General Secretary (GS) post with 3,930 votes.
Ferdous Al Hasan was elected Assistant General Secretary (AGS), and Ayesha Siddika Meghla became the AGS (Female). The results were announced at the Senate Building on Saturday afternoon. The declaration began with a minute of silence in memory of late teacher Jannatul Ferdous, martyrs of the Liberation War, and the fallen heroes of the 1974 student uprising.

Jahangirnagar University announced it will be closed on Sunday; all classes and offices will be shut and previously scheduled exams postponed. The university cited intense involvement of faculty, students and staff in JUCSU and hall-union vote preparation, polling and counting on September 10–13, during which many worked tirelessly through the night and now face exhaustion.
The notice added that many ordinary students are also mentally fatigued; for that reason, the university decided to suspend activities for the day. Regular classes and office hours will resume on Monday, but all finalized examinations already scheduled remain postponed. Admissions for first-year undergraduate (honours) for the 2024–25 academic year will continue as planned tomorrow.
Jahangirnagar University to Remain Closed Sunday; Classes, Offices and Scheduled Exams Suspended
Officials have not yet announced the final results of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) and hall council elections. After completing the manual counting of hall council ballots, election authorities began counting central council votes, prompting frustration among students and candidates over the delay.
The university’s vice chancellor held an emergency meeting with the election commission and decreed that additional staff would be deployed to announce results overnight; however, that plan did not materialize. So far, vote counting has finished in 14 of the central council’s 21 halls.
In a related development, Professor Mafrufi Sattar, a member of the election commission, resigned citing irregularities. AGS candidate Ferdous Al Hasan, backed by Islami Chhatra Shibir, claimed that the resignation was proof that the election’s credibility had been undermined.

Sultana Akter, returning officer at Nawab Foyzunnesa Hall, has boycotted the JUCSU election vote counting process, citing unbearable workload and inefficiency of the manual counting method.
“Three days of relentless labor has left us physically and mentally broken. Under this analog system, even in three days the count won’t finish,” she said, also blaming the administration for a colleague’s recent death during the process.
Meanwhile, election commission member Dr. Lutfur Elahi assured that counting was ongoing, with only three hall unions left to tally before JUCSU results would begin.

After 52 hours of continuous protest, nine Chittagong University students ended their hunger strike on Friday afternoon after Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yahya Akhter personally assured them that their demands would be addressed.
At 4 PM, the students broke their fast by drinking sherbet offered by the VC in front of the Proctor’s office.
The seven demands included: publishing a list of injured students from the recent clashes, ensuring advanced medical care, securing housing for displaced students, recovering their belongings, protecting identified vulnerable students, bringing perpetrators to justice, halting harassment of innocent locals, forming a joint coordination committee with quarterly meetings, and implementing the syndicate’s roadmap for a safer campus.

The vote-counting process in the JUCSU election has been temporarily suspended as returning officers debate whether to proceed manually or with Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) scanning.
An emergency meeting is underway, and the decision will be announced afterward. Until then, counting in three remaining halls is on hold.
Many students and candidates have expressed frustration over the delays. Although OMR counting was initially planned, objections from several panels — including the Chhatra Dal — led to a shift to manual counting. Nearly 20 hours after polls closed, the commission has yet to finish tallying votes.

The funeral prayer of Jannatul Ferdous, a teacher who died suddenly while serving as a polling officer in the JUCSU and hall council elections, was held after Jumma prayers at the university’s central playground.
Proctor AKM Rashidul Alam explained that vote counting could not be completed overnight due to exhaustion and the absence of polling agents. On Friday morning, while heading with colleagues to count votes at the Senate Hall, Ferdous collapsed at the entrance and passed away.
She was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Fine Arts. Her untimely death has cast a pall of grief over the university’s teachers and students.

Nine students of Chittagong University (CU) have been on an indefinite hunger strike demanding the resignation of the proctorial body along with six other demands. By Friday 2 PM, the strike had entered its 50th hour.
So far, three students have been hospitalized due to illness, while the remaining six continue their protest with saline support. On Thursday, the university administration urged the protesters to call off the strike and sit for talks on Sunday, but the students rejected the request.
Their demands include:
Publishing the full list of injured students in recent clashes and ensuring their medical treatment.
Immediate arrangement of proper temporary housing and retrieval of belongings for displaced students.
Guaranteeing safety for identified at-risk students.
Bringing the real perpetrators to justice while stopping harassment of innocent locals.
Forming a joint coordination committee with representatives from all sides, meeting at least once every three months.
Publishing and implementing the syndicate’s resolutions and a roadmap for a safe campus.
Public apology and resignation of the proctorial body for failing in its responsibilities.

Md. Robiul Islam, a first-year Accounting and Information Systems student, claimed his vote was stolen during the JUCSU and hall union elections.
“I waited 20 minutes in line to cast my first-ever vote, only to find out it had already been cast by someone else,” Robiul said.
Polling officer Md. Zakir Hossain confirmed that CCTV footage revealed another individual had voted using a fake ID card. “When Robiul arrived with his original ID, we verified the authenticity. The matter has been reported to the central election commission,” he added.
