Comilla’s Sadar South Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam has been removed from his post and transferred to the district police lines following a sudden flash rally by the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway. The transfer order was issued on Monday, and Inspector Md. Selim, previously stationed at the court, has been appointed as the new OC.

While the Superintendent of Police described the move as part of routine administrative reshuffling, questions have been raised regarding the highway police’s inaction during the incident.

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a warning that Bangladeshi exports may face a 35% tariff starting August 1. In a letter to interim Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, Trump cited Bangladesh’s trade surplus, non-tariff barriers, and discriminatory policies as threats to U.S. economic interests and national security. He indicated that unless these trade barriers are lifted, the additional tariffs will be implemented. However, if Bangladesh opens its markets and reforms its policies, the U.S. is open to reconsidering the move. Similar letters were reportedly sent to 14 other nations.

The Forest Department has started a loudspeaker campaign in the border areas of Sherpur’s Nalitabari, Jhenaigati, and Sreebardi to raise awareness about wild elephant protection. Citizens are urged to follow the Wildlife Conservation and Security Act, 2012, which prohibits harming elephants. Violators face jail and fines. On Sunday night, police from the Maulachak outpost arrested a young man named Nazmul for allegedly raping a minor student in Bhannara Kaler Vita area of Maulachak Union, Gazipur. According to the case, the victim’s father runs a butcher shop renting a house owned by Nazmul’s in-laws. Nazmul, who lives there with his family, allegedly took advantage of the victim being alone on July 5th, forcibly assaulting her at his home. The child informed her parents around 9 PM, who immediately reported the incident to the police and filed a case.

In a heartbreaking incident in Bibandi village of Srinagar, Munshiganj, a mother has been accused of drowning her seven-month-old twin daughters in a pond. The tragedy occurred around 9 PM on Monday. The victims, Lamia and Samiha, were the daughters of Sohel Sheikh and Shanta Begum. According to locals, Shanta allegedly threw the infants into the pond herself. Neighbors rescued the babies and rushed them to a hospital, where doctors declared them dead. In the aftermath, enraged residents detained the couple and handed them over to the police. Srinagar Police have confirmed the incident, and legal proceedings are underway.

Despite a month passing since Cyclone ‘Shokhti’ hit, the only brick road in Dhalchar Union, Charfassion, Bhola, has yet to be repaired. Guwabari Government Primary School in Gaibandha’s Saghata Upazila has faced severe erosion from the Jamuna River, forcing it to move 16 times over the last four decades. Bangladesh's inflation rate fell to 8.48% in June 2025, down from 9.05% in May and 9.72% in June 2024, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics. The drop is mainly attributed to a decrease in both food and non-food prices. Food inflation declined significantly to 7.39% in June from 8.59% the previous month, offering some relief to consumers. Non-food inflation saw a slight decrease to 9.37% from 9.42%. The easing of inflation reflects improved price stability in essential commodities.
