Gano Adhikar Parishad General Secretary Rashed Khan has alleged that efforts are underway to restore the Awami League to power through a revamped Jatiya Party, under the leadership of its new Secretary General, Barrister Shamim Haider Patwary. He claimed that after earlier attempts involving figures like Saber Hossain Chowdhury and Mannan failed, Patwary is now being used as the last resort. Rashed further accused the interim government of cooperating in this alleged deception, stating that the plan is being orchestrated according to Indian strategy. “Even if the Prime Minister herself cannot return directly, they are trying to regain power using the Jatiya Party as a proxy,” he added.

The High Court has released its full verdict declaring Sections 20 and 21 of the 15th Amendment, which abolished the caretaker government system, unconstitutional and void. The court also invalidated several added constitutional articles and reinstated the referendum provision under Article 142, saying its removal undermined the Constitution’s basic structure. The 15th Amendment made 54 changes in total, but the court left the decision on other provisions to the next Parliament. The verdict followed writs filed by civil society leaders in 2023.

Senior leaders of the Jatiya Nagarik Party have paid their respects at the grave of Abrar Fahad, a student of BUET who was beaten to death by activists of the ruling party’s student wing, Chhatra League. The leaders described Abrar as a powerful symbol of resistance against fascism and said his tragic death marked a turning point in the struggle against Indian hegemony in Bangladesh’s political landscape. They also met with Abrar’s family and engaged in discussions with local residents.

The United States may reconsider the recently imposed 35% tariff on Bangladeshi products, according to Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed. He stated that a key meeting between Bangladesh’s Trade Adviser and representatives of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) will be held on Wednesday, July 9, to discuss the issue.

Dr. Ahmed noted that the trade deficit between Bangladesh and the U.S. is only $5 billion, making such a high tariff unjustifiable. The 35% tariff is scheduled to take effect on August 1. Previously, a 37% tariff was proposed in April but was suspended for three months.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir held a courtesy meeting with Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan. Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin said that foreign observers who endorsed the legitimacy of the last three national elections will not be invited for the upcoming polls. After a meeting with the Canadian ambassador in Agargaon, he stated that while many countries, including those in the EU, are interested in sending observers, those with a history of approving disputed elections will be excluded. He also confirmed discussions with the ambassador focused on election preparations, voter awareness, and the use of AI.

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam stated that Dhaka is eager to secure a mutually beneficial (“win-win”) tariff agreement with the U.S. Trade Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin is currently in Washington leading discussions with the U.S., accompanied by National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman. Following a letter from President Trump regarding the imposition of a 35% tariff starting August 1, several rounds of talks have taken place. Another meeting is scheduled for July 9.

Legal adviser Asif Nazrul asserted that the judiciary is operating at full capacity and expressed confidence that those he termed “fascists” will be held accountable before the upcoming national election. Speaking at a screening of the documentary Shrabon Bidroho, based on the July Movement, Nazrul emphasized the government’s commitment to justice, reform, and the rehabilitation of martyrs' families. Other speakers included media adviser Mahfuz Alam, cultural adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, rights activist Adilur Rahman, and relatives of martyrs. They described the July Movement as a symbol of prolonged resistance and called for a cultural and moral stand against fascism. A swift trial for the killings of protestors was strongly demanded.

BNP leaders from Bhola-2 have strongly refuted a land-grabbing allegation against senior leader and former MP Hafiz Ibrahim, calling it false and politically motivated.

At a press conference held at Daulatkhan Press Club, BNP activists demanded an impartial investigation and punishment for those making the false claims. Ibrahim stated that the complainant, Selim, is not from his constituency and has no connection to him. He clarified that the land dispute involves Selim and the husband of his niece, and a case has already been filed over it. He warned that this smear campaign is part of a broader conspiracy ahead of the upcoming national election to destabilize the political environment.

The Election Commission has issued letters to 50 registered political parties requesting submission of their annual income and expenditure reports. However, the banned Awami League was excluded from this directive.

According to regulations, parties must submit the previous year's financials by July 31. Failure to submit for three consecutive years may lead to deregistration. Additionally, new applicants for party registration have been given a 15-day window to submit required documents.

The National Democratic Movement (NDM) has proposed key electoral reforms during a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). Among their demands: holding general elections by February, redrawing parliamentary boundaries within two months, capping campaign expenditures at Tk 4 million, and amending the Representation of the People Order (RPO) to prevent banned Awami League leaders from contesting elections under disguise.

NDM Chairman Bobby Hajjaj emphasized that a clause should be added to ensure disqualified AL leaders cannot circumvent the ban. On the same day, Bangladesh Amjanagon Party met with the CEC and expressed hope for a festive and participatory election.

Amid ongoing internal strife and uncertainty over its future direction, the central committee of Jatiya Party has announced an emergency press conference. It will be held on Tuesday, July 8 at 12:00 PM at the Baridhara residence of Co-Chairman Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud.

Top leaders including Barrister Mahmud and ABM Ruhul Amin Hawlader are expected to speak. Media representatives, press club units, and diplomatic correspondents have been invited to attend.

Comilla’s Sadar South Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam has been removed from his post and transferred to the district police lines following a sudden flash rally by the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway. The transfer order was issued on Monday, and Inspector Md. Selim, previously stationed at the court, has been appointed as the new OC.

While the Superintendent of Police described the move as part of routine administrative reshuffling, questions have been raised regarding the highway police’s inaction during the incident.

The Forest Department has started a loudspeaker campaign in the border areas of Sherpur’s Nalitabari, Jhenaigati, and Sreebardi to raise awareness about wild elephant protection. Citizens are urged to follow the Wildlife Conservation and Security Act, 2012, which prohibits harming elephants. Violators face jail and fines. The department also promises compensation for damages caused by elephants. People are advised to avoid provoking elephants and report sightings to authorities. Since 2014, 45 people and 35 elephants have died in related incidents in Sherpur.

Advisor Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan unveiled nameplates for ‘Shaheed Junayed Chattar’ and ‘Shaheed Shahariar Khan Anas Road’ in Gandaria, Dhaka. The event commemorated Mehedi Hasan Junayed and Shahariar Khan Anas, martyrs of the July mass uprising. He vowed that their sacrifice will not be in vain and called for structural reforms to end fascist rule and ensure justice for extrajudicial killings. Family members of the martyrs demanded preservation of graves and memorials, and urged speedy implementation of the July massacre certificate.
